From Runes to Realms: Discovering the Anglo-Saxons
During the children’s first term in year 4, we will be exploring what life was like after the Romans left Britain and the Anglo Saxons arrived. Throughout the different subjects we study, we will deepen our understanding of our theme and consider how the Anglo Saxons helped shape Britain today. To help us with this, we will reading the text ‘Winter of the Wolves’ by Tony Bradman which is about the coming of age of the main character Oslaf as the tribe he belongs to migrates to Britannia. We will also study to fascinating tales of King Arthur as well as explore some non-fiction books. In geography, we will be becoming familiar with some of the major places, mountains and rivers in the United Kingdom whilst also developing our map skills.

Key Information
PE
We will have PE lessons on a Monday and Wednesday this year. Please ensure that your child's PE kit is named and in school at all times as we sometimes have additional sessions too. It is expected that any long hair (below the shoulders) is tied back and that any ear studs are removed. As well as their PE kit, it is important that the children also have a water bottle.
Reading
Children are expected to be reading at home at least 3 times per week and record this in their reading record. We will be checking these weekly to see how the children are get on with this. The children are expected to read their school reading book but are also welcome to read anything else as well.
Times tables
Children are encouraged to continue using Times Table Rock Stars (TTRS) at home 3 times per week. Every child has their username and password to enable them to log in – these are the same as last year and will be in the children’s homework books. If you have any problems logging in, please speak to the class teacher. There are also many other ways to practice you multiplication facts away from TTRS and this will be a major focus in year 4.
Purple Mash
The children have access to Purple Mash which they can use whenever they want. This platform can be used to support them in completing their weekly theme homework. Their login information and password remain the same as last year.
Weekly homework
Each week, the children are set a piece of theme homework to be completed by a given deadline (usually then following Friday). If you have any questions about the homework task, please do not hesitate to contact the class teacher.
